Jellyfish Labs (Phil Vischer)
Buck Denver Asks… What's in the Bible?
Thirteen volumes of puppets, songs and a host walking children through every book of the Bible in order — nine on the Old Testament, four on the New. It teaches the shape of the canon rather than retelling the stories: covenant, exile, why there are two testaments, where the books came from.
Why this is listed
Vischer made this after VeggieTales because he had concluded VeggieTales taught children to be nice rather than teaching them the Bible. That self-correction is the reason to pick this one: it is the only children's series we know of that explains canon, covenant and exile instead of handing over a bag of loose stories.
Before you press play
This is teaching, not dramatisation, so there is very little invented — the puppets are frames for explanation, not characters inside the text. On Genesis 1 it deliberately presents more than one Christian reading of the days of creation and the age of the earth rather than settling the question, which some parents will want to preview. It also explains plainly why Catholic and Protestant Bibles contain different books. The violence of Judges, the conquest and the exile are described honestly but never shown; a small child is far likelier to be bored than frightened.
Suited to Young children. Age judgements are ours, not a rating board’s — you know your own family.
How to start
- Open whatsinthebible.com (opens an external site) and read what Jellyfish Labs (Phil Vischer) says about itself before you read anything else.
- Read the note above first. It is there so an evening does not go wrong twenty minutes in.
- Watch it yourself before you watch it with children, if there are children.
- Read the passage it dramatises alongside it. The point is to send you back to the text, not to replace it.
- Afterwards, ask what the story added and what it left out. That conversation is worth more than the film.
