DreamWorks Animation
The Prince of Egypt
The Exodus story told as animation, following Moses from the Nile basket to the parting of the sea. The plagues and the final night in Egypt are played with real weight rather than softened, and the score carries much of the storytelling.
Why this is listed
The rare biblical adaptation that treats the source as serious literature rather than as a lesson with pictures. It consulted biblical scholars and clergy across traditions during production, and it is the version most likely to make an adult reread Exodus afterwards.
Before you press play
Invents the brothers' relationship between Moses and Rameses, which is the film's main dramatic licence and is not in Exodus. The plagues sequence and the death of the firstborn are genuinely frightening — a shadow passing over houses, Egyptian parents grieving — and are too much for most children under about seven. Moses' Midianite years and the golden calf are compressed or omitted.
Suited to Older children. Age judgements are ours, not a rating board’s — you know your own family.
How to start
- Open dreamworks.com (opens an external site) and read what DreamWorks Animation says about itself before you read anything else.
- Read the note above first. It is there so an evening does not go wrong twenty minutes in.
- Watch it yourself before you watch it with children, if there are children.
- Read the passage it dramatises alongside it. The point is to send you back to the text, not to replace it.
- Afterwards, ask what the story added and what it left out. That conversation is worth more than the film.

Joseph: King of Dreams
DreamWorks Animation
The Genesis account of Joseph — the coat, the pit, Potiphar's house, the prison, the famine and the reunion — made as a direct-to-video companion to The Prince of Egypt. Joseph's dreams are rendered as a swirling Van Gogh-styled sequence that sets them visibly apart from the waking story.
