RevelationMedia
The Pilgrim's Progress (animated)
A computer-animated feature film of John Bunyan's allegory, following Christian from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Made for family viewing and translated into many languages for use overseas.
Why this is listed
The official site's FAQ confirms RevelationMedia as distributor, a runtime of nearly two hours, a PG rating, and a suggested age of 8 and up because of demon scenes and the battle with Apollyon. RevelationMedia sells a DVD and book set and has run free online viewing events, most recently sponsored with RedeemTV; the free link changes by event, so check the official site.
Before you press play
An animated retelling of Bunyan's allegory that condenses the book and simplifies some episodes. Rated PG: Apollyon, the Giant Despair and Vanity Fair are frightening for young children. Best from about eight up, or watched together.
Suited to Older children. Age judgements are ours, not a rating board’s — you know your own family.
How to start
- Open pilgrims.movie (opens an external site) and read what RevelationMedia says about itself before you read anything else.
- Read the note above first. It is there so an evening does not go wrong twenty minutes in.
- Watch it yourself before you watch it with children, if there are children.
- Read the passage it dramatises alongside it. The point is to send you back to the text, not to replace it.
- Afterwards, ask what the story added and what it left out. That conversation is worth more than the film.
