The Hiding Place

Corrie ten Boom and her family hide Jews above their Haarlem watch shop, are betrayed, and are sent to Ravensbrück. Adapted from Corrie's own book and made by Billy Graham's film company in 1975.

Why this is listed

The rare Christian film about suffering that does not resolve it. Betsie dies. The film lets her die, and lets Corrie's later forgiveness of a camp guard be difficult rather than triumphant. Almost nothing else from this production house holds that line.

Before you press play

Close to Corrie ten Boom's own account, with names and sequence largely intact; the compression is in the Ravensbrück sections, which cover months in minutes. Betsie ten Boom dies in the camp and the film shows it. The camp material — the delousing, the beatings, prisoners dying — is real and is too much for children under about twelve. The ten Booms were Dutch Reformed and the piety on screen is theirs. The film was made by Billy Graham's World Wide Pictures, and some prints close with an evangelistic appeal that is not part of the drama.

Suited to Teens. Age judgements are ours, not a rating board’s — you know your own family.

How to start

  1. Open billygraham.org (opens an external site) and read what World Wide Pictures says about itself before you read anything else.
  2. Read the note above first. It is there so an evening does not go wrong twenty minutes in.
  3. Watch it yourself before you watch it with children, if there are children.
  4. Read the passage it dramatises alongside it. The point is to send you back to the text, not to replace it.
  5. Afterwards, ask what the story added and what it left out. That conversation is worth more than the film.
