Every Tribe Entertainment

End of the Spear

A 2006 feature film telling the story of the five missionaries killed by the Waodani in Ecuador in 1956, and of what happened afterward when the families of the dead went to live among the tribe. It is told largely from the point of view of Mincayani, one of the men who did the killing.

Before you press play

Based on the 1956 killing of five missionaries by the Waodani and what followed, told largely from the Waodani side. Rated PG-13 for the spearings and tribal violence, which are shown. Some people and events are composited. Teens and up.

Suited to Adults. Age judgements are ours, not a rating board’s — you know your own family.

How to start

  1. Open rottentomatoes.com (opens an external site) and read what Every Tribe Entertainment says about itself before you read anything else.
  2. Read the note above first. It is there so an evening does not go wrong twenty minutes in.
  3. Watch it yourself before you watch it with children, if there are children.
  4. Read the passage it dramatises alongside it. The point is to send you back to the text, not to replace it.
  5. Afterwards, ask what the story added and what it left out. That conversation is worth more than the film.
