Central Union Mission

Shelter and feed D.C. neighbours with Central Union Mission

Washington’s oldest rescue mission, serving the District since 1884: emergency shelter and meals for homeless men, a men’s spiritual-transformation recovery programme, family services, a children’s summer camp, and free food, clothing, and furniture. Volunteers serve on-site in the kitchen, the warehouse, or the programmes.

Why this is listed

An explicitly gospel-centred mission that has done the same unglamorous work in the same city for more than a century, and is ECFA-accredited, so its books are checked against an outside standard. It is a place a Washington believer can actually turn up and serve.

How to start

  1. Open missiondc.org (opens an external site) and read what Central Union Mission says about itself before you read anything else.
  2. Check the time it asks for: ongoing.
  3. Look at the filings below, then decide. Numbers are context, not a verdict.
  4. Tell your church. Going out is rarely meant to be done alone.
