The Bowery Mission

Take a meal shift at The Bowery Mission

New York's oldest continuously operating rescue mission, running since 1879, serves meals, beds, and clothing and houses a long residential recovery programme across its Bowery and Harlem sites. Volunteers book a specific meal shift or a standing weekly slot; group slots fill months ahead.

Why this is listed

Listed as the pattern to look for in your own city: a mission old enough to have outlasted every passing trend, with a shift you can book rather than a form nobody answers. If you are not in New York, the equivalent near you is almost certainly a Citygate Network member.

How to start

  1. Open bowery.org (opens an external site) and read what The Bowery Mission says about itself before you read anything else.
  2. Check the time it asks for: a few hours.
  3. Look at the filings below, then decide. Numbers are context, not a verdict.
  4. Tell your church. Going out is rarely meant to be done alone.
